April 1953-March1955

When I came aboard the Uvalde in April of 1953, I was assigned to the Operations Division as a Radarman striker.  I was given the evening radar watch the day we got underway from our homeport at the Oakland Naval Supply Depot, bound for Sasebo, Japan.

Japan

Once we passed under the Golden gate Bridge, we  entered an area of choppy water called the    " Potato Patch " by the old Salts.  I'm sure its name was derived from the water's rough appearance, as compared to a plowed field.  I spent my entire first watch with my hands tightly holding the handles on the front of the radar set,  and a bucket held firmly between my knees.  As a flatlander from central Illinois, I had never been in a boat, or on a ship.  I was surprised to find that I could be so sick, and live to tell about it.
