ken-barbathome@comcast.net Great website. It brought back many wonderfull memories. I served on the Uvalde from Sept 1961 through Sept 1963, taking the ship out of mothballs, through the Panama Canal, on several Caribbean cruises, a Mediteranean Cruise and during the Cuban Missile crisis. It was a great ship,we had a great crew, worked hard but had a lot of fun. Ken Hoving

edsleight@aol.com I served aboard the Uvalde as CIC Officer 1965-1967
01/13/2005 04:20:04 I was USMC Cpl E-4 Radio Relay Technician and shop chief of the 2nd Marine Division, HQ BN, Communications Company, Radio Relay Platoon. I along with my tech force volunteered our services to Capt Baldwin and worked alongside the ships company during the Cuban Missle Blockade. Most memoriable is the Tropical Storm we sailed thru on our way back to Camp Lejune, An LST, Suffolk County, I think lost her tank deck seals when a buldozer broke lose and crashed into her forward doors. The Uvalde high nlined to her and server as a sea anchor until the problem was undwer control. This Marine learned and can still sling a one-handed bowline to a life line on a mweather deck. J. J. Marsh, Cpl E-4 USMC. Oct to Dec 1962.
rjchester@insightbb.com Cool page. My father's ship, the USS Yancey AKA 93 was also built at Moore Drydock in 44. I bet if you check close, they were in service at the same places. She the Yancey was used at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Operation Highjump, the Cuban missle crisis, and many of the same places as the AKA 88. Dad is a World WarII veteran and my mother, wife and I accompany him to his reunions every year. It's a blast. Many generations of sailors are there. Our "Old Gal" has quite a following. Could you give me a clue on how this website is made? I think that the Yancey needs one as well. Maybe we could do a reunion together? Ours is in Norfolk next November. Reguards, Rick Chester.
jvsullivan@ipass.net I've been looking for an old Navy friend, Radioman Thomas "Diddybop" Weber, whom I served with at Navcommsta Londonderry Northern Ireland back in 1964, and who was later transferred to the Uvalde in 1964. Any idea where he is now, how to contact him, or where in New York he was originally from? Actually, any info would be helpful. We're organizing a reunion and would love to locate him. Many thanks! Jim Sullivan, RM2, 1963-1967.

j_blake3@hotmail.com I was aboard the USS YANCEY (AKA-93)61-62. We were recommissioned the day before the UVALDE. It looks like your ship may have been the AKA that accompanied us in January 62 to Norfolk. Reason for the curiosity is off the coast of Mexico we were about to engage in a towing exercise and collided resulting in serious damage to us....and a stay in the shipyards for extensive repairs. Anybody recall if that was your ship? Thanks.
